Rotterdam: A brief history

I have just finished my research into the history of this great city and I was emotionally moved by the strength, determination and most of all the hope of citizens during the period of the 1940s. I conducted this research to support a design project based around the historic Doelen and the Schouwburgplein.

The destruction of the city was known as the Rotterdam Blitz and it obliterated the city, leaving few buildings standing. Shocking pictures show the wasteland that is left in the wake of the bombings. Not only this but the invasion of German forces meant the seizing of all port equipment which was an area that was just beginning to develop. Not only was there a loss of housing and infrastructure but the loss of lives. Thousands of Dutch soldiers were killed over this time and over 900 citizens of the city were killed.

It would be fair to say the city was torn down to its bare bones but the story of the rebuilding of their home is such an inspiration.

The hope, grit and pure strength of will shown by all those who lived in the city is something I think should be remembered and celebrated.

Now the scar of the war still runs deep within the veins of the city but the healing process makes those local to the area, proud of their city. New infrastructure has meant the growth of Rotterdam with some great architectural features and infrastructure.

I would love to pay tribute to those whose shoulders on which the city stands on in my design to bring light to the inspirational story of this incredible city.
